When is bread eaten in france
About that time, some families, particularly those without ovens of their own, began to take their dough to small local bakeries to have the dough shaped and baked. As towns and villages sprang up throughout the countryside, bakeries flourished and home baking decreased significantly. These local bakeries had large brick ovens heated by wood or coal. The dough was moved in and out of the ovens with a long-handled wooden shovel called a "peel.
The French are renowned for their artisan breads. By using the four basic ingredients of water, flour, yeast, and salt, the French have mastered the art of creating complex breads that widely vary, despite the fact that each loaf contains the mixture of the same ingredients. OH is that what that wire part is for that kind of lifts up over the top of the slats? Hard to explain but I think I know what you mean.
We buy baguettes at least once a day sometimes more in our household and have it with every meal. Our village boulangerie closed several years ago when the owner retired. New people wanted to take it over, but apparently the kitchen was condemned by the health inspectors, too expensive to bring up to the required standard, and consequently it has never re-opened. The next village down the road also lost its boulangerie when the baker retired, but it has been replaced with a baguette machine.
You put a 1 euro coin in the slot and a baguette in a paper bag plops down a chute. They will come and top up the machine. Funnily enough, our elderly French neighbour is thrilled about this, and proclaims the baguette far superior to that which she had bought from the village baker for the previous 30 years.
I always smile when I see just about everyone here not being able to help themselves by eating the end bit of the baguette before they get home for lunch or dinner. Excellent list. Oh man, now that you mention it I may be guilty of that too.
No need to be annoying and ask every 10 min for someone to pass the baguette down to me again. And again. I loved this post!! Even here in Germany I buy whenever I find a fresh one at the bakery or supermarket unfortunately even though the Germans are well-know for their bread, somehow baguette is not the common one around here.
Thank you! Yes, the baguette really is something French people buy daily. All ages. The French definitely do baguettes the best. Would love to try German bread! Sometimes I feel baguettes are single servings, if no one else is around to notice. Fresh out of the over is hard to resist. When I was young living in Normandy, it was a quarter of a baguette, a large pat of butter, and a big square of chocolate.
Great tips — I married a Frenchman and learned many of them the hard way!! We have a bread storage container in the gote but I am not sure anyone has ever realised what it is for! Popping by very late from AllAbout France! The first thing I do is tear off the end of the baguette and eat it, usually while in the store. Hi Diane! Your email address will not be published.
